What is a National Insurance number and how do I get one?

If you're looking for work or starting work, you will need a National Insurance number.

Your National Insurance (NI) number is a unique personal number which is used to record your National Insurance contributions and tax that you pay. It also acts as a reference number when communicating with the Department of Work and Pensions and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). You do not need to have a NI number before starting work, but you must obtain one when you get a job.

If you have the right to work in the UK, you will need to phone Jobcentre Plus on Tel: 0845 600 0643 (lines are open 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday) to arrange to get one. They may require you to attend an 'evidence of identity' interview.
