Carers' Bursary

Students who are carers for their parents / immediate family member (excluding children) and have been recognised as such by their local authority, may be able to apply to the university’s Carers' Bursary each academic year.

This is a non-repayable bursary of £1,200 per year awarded to carers who continue to have caring responsibilities whilst they are studying at university. It is paid in instalments over the academic year directly into the student’s bank account.

Who can apply?  

  • UK ‘Home’, full-time undergraduate students who have taken out at least the minimum maintenance loan.
  • UK ‘Home’ and EU, full-time postgraduate students who have taken out the maximum postgraduate loan. 
  • EU, full-time undergraduate students who fulfil the UK residency criteria and who have taken out at least the minimum maintenance loan.

How do I apply?

  • Please complete the application form.
  • Please follow the instructions on the application form on how to submit it.
  • You must show how you are still a carer whilst studying and may be invited for a further meeting.
  • Please ensure you provide the evidence as requested on the form. 

When can I apply?

  • You can apply any time during the 2019/20 academic year. 
  • The deadline to submit applications is 19 June 2020.
  • You may only apply once during an academic year.
  • Applicants will be notified in writing within three weeks.
  • Continuing students who are still carers, can reapply by contacting the Student Funding Team.
