The RIE team
Southampton Solent University has policies and guidance in place to ensure a sound environment for doing research and learning about research approaches, methods and protocols.
The environment for postgraduate research degree provision is underpinned by the Research and Innovation Strategy and a set of four policies directly relevant to research degrees. These are:
These policies are supported by a number of procedures set out in the code of practice for postgraduate research degrees.
The code of practice is aimed at all those involved in postgraduate research programmes: applicants, registered students on a research degree programme, as well as academic staff and support staff involved in the management and implementation of good practice in all aspects of the postgraduate research student experience including admissions, progression, supervision, examination, pastoral care and general student support, and the wider research environment.
Code of practice, policies and procedures
The University’s Academic Board retains responsibility for the effectiveness of the arrangements for safeguarding the academic standards of awards and enhancing the quality of postgraduate research provision under this agreement; but has delegated operational responsibility for overseeing the University’s research degree provision to the Research Degrees Committee.
The Research Degrees Committee has three primary elements to its remit: to act on behalf of Academic Board as the guardian of standards and of the regulatory framework for student research, to serve as the equivalent of an ‘examination/progression board’ for research students, and to promote and enhance the quality of their experience. Academic Board also receives reports from the Research and Innovation Committee, to which the University Ethics Committee reports.
Committees’ Terms of Reference
Postgraduate research degrees are awarded through a long-established agreement with Nottingham Trent University (NTU). Recently this institutional partnership went under a successful review, specifically analysising our PGR provisions.
