Step-by-step guide to inter-library loans

1. Find the details of the book or journal article you want

  • For journal articles - journal title, article title, author, volume, issue, page nos and date

2. Check the library catalogue!

  • Check our catalogue to make sure the item is not already in the library collection or available in our online collections
  • Check Google and Google Scholar as the article may be freely available online

For more help using library e-resources and finding journal articles, contact your information librarian. There may be lots of other useful material available that they can help you find.

3. Submit an inter-library loan request form

By completing this form, you are agreeing to the copyright declaration stating that the item will not be used for commercial purposes.

Journal articles

Most of our journal article requests are supplied by email within 3-10 days. We will forward them to you. These emails will be sent to your University email address only.

Most journal artciles come from the British Library. The first time you use the service, you will be prompted to download a plug-in that will allow you to open the document. Full instructions are included in the email we send you.

Remember:

  • You must access the document within 14 days.
  • We recommend that you print off a copy of the document immediately.
  • You can print the document only once.
  • You can download the document to your computer, laptop or tablet. It can then be viewed on that device only for up to three years.

Arrival of the document in your email box constitutes delivery and copyright law prohibits us from providing a second copy.

For books and other items (some of which may be for use in the library only) we will email you to let you know when they are available.

These items can be collected from the inter-librayr loans office on the ground floor of the Mountbatten Library (Room ML014) during core library hours (see below).
