If all the copies of a book or DVD you require are on loan to other reservbooklibrary users you can sign in to the library catalogue to place a reservation.

A reservation prevents items from being renewed each week until a copy is returned to the library. That item is then put aside for you to collect.

Placing a reservation

Search the library catalogue for the book or DVD you require and check there are no copies available in the library (if there are copies showing as 'on shelf' you will not be able to place a reservation).

Click on 'request' and select a 'not needed after' date.  Click on 'send request' and a message will appear to let you know if your reservation was successful.

We notify you when your reserved item becomes available (via university email/webmail). You can also check your account online via the library catalogue.  Sign in and click on 'library account' (top right of screen). The status of your reservation will change to 'on hold' once the book is available for collection.

Reservation not available?

If you are having problems reserving a book it could be due to one of the following reasons:

  • A copy of the book is showing as available on the catalogue - books can only be reserved if all copies are on loan (even if you cannot find the book on the shelf). If you need any assistance finding library material please ask a member of staff. A book collection service is available for part-time students.
  • A copy of the item is on loan to you - if an item on loan to you has been requested, you will need to return it before placing a reservation yourself.
  • The library only has a reference copy of the item - these are for use in the library only.

Missing Items

If you are unable to find an item in the library please ask a member of staff for assistance. If we are unable to locate the item we may ask if you would like to leave your contact details so we can continue to search on your behalf. If we find the item we would then put it aside for you, if not we can reserve other copies for you or consider replacement.

Collecting your reservation

When your reserved item becomes available, you normally have seven days to collect it (the final collection date is included in the email we send you).

Reservations awaiting collection are located on shelves close to the Mountbatten information point. They are shelved in campus card number order and will need to be issued using the self-service machines.

If you have any queries or no longer need a requested item please email You can also speak to a member of staff at the information point in the library foyer for assistance.
