Late opening

Term time opening hours will begin on Monday 24 September 2018.

After 7pm in term-time and 5pm at weekends

ClockDuring term-time, library staff are available until 7pm each evening (Monday to Friday) and until 5pm at weekends.

After library staff leave, the library remains open with the assistance of security staff and our team of library student ambassadors.

During the academic year the library will have periods of 24 hour opening. Security staff are on duty overnight during this time but they will not be able to provide support with the use of library facilities and resources during this time.

What will be available

  • Support with using the facilities and resources via our team of library student ambassadors (usually available until 11.45pm during the week and until 8pm at the weekend)
  • Self service issue and return - You will need a valid Campus Card and your borrower account must be free of any blocks/overdue items. Please make sure that your card can be read by the self-service machines as some cards may not scan and that would prevent you being able to borrow any items after 7pm*
  • Access to the main collections
  • Use of PCs and photocopiers*
  • Use of all the study areas
  • Study rooms will open for use but no keys will be issued after 6.45pm and any keys already issued must be handed in before the building closes 11.45pm (or by 8.30am during 24 hour opening)

What won't be available

  • Fully staffed services: i.e. no Information desk, learning technology or print centre staff will be available.
  • Overnight support with use of library facilities and resources during 24 hour opening.
  • Access to the closed stack areas
  • Equipment loans from the learning technology help desk
  • Collection of inter-library loans

* Some services are dependent upon the IT network being available and this cannot be fully guaranteed as no IT support will be available.

Accessing the library

You must have a valid campus card to gain access or re-entry to the building after 9pm on weekdays and after 5pm at the weekend. If you do not have your card, you will not be able to gain access during these later opening periods. Access is not available to anyone other than Solent students and staff during overnight opening.

Please read our access policy for further information.

Behaviour in the library

Our usual rules apply about using the library. A few special points to note are:

Anyone appearing to be under the influence of alcohol will not be permitted to enter the library by security staff or may be asked to leave the premises. The consumption of alcohol in the library is not permitted.

Inappropriate behaviour
Anyone engaging in disturbing or intimate behaviour that could cause concern or embarrassment to other library users will be asked to leave the building

We fully appreciate that those working late at night might occasionally have a short sleep due to tiredness but anyone using the library as a place to sleep for a prolonged period may be asked to leave.

Food and drink
The usual rules still apply during late opening periods. So please do not bring in or consume any hot, greasy or smelly foods in the library. If you are bringing drinks in please make sure they are in re-sealable containers to avoid spillages. Drinks and snack foods are available from the vending machines in the Foyer and on Floor 2. Please put any rubbish in the bins provided.

Getting home

Please do consider your personal safety when leaving the building late at night and take sensible precautions to ensure you get home safely.
