Password self service

ICT have made it easier to securely manage your own account and password, whether you need to reset it for security reasons, to stop it expiring or if you have just simply forgotten it.

Before you use the Self-Service Password Reset system for the first time, you will need to register to use the service.

There are two options available to do this, either by registering an alternative email address or by downloading the mobile application - please see below:

Registering for Self-Service Password Reset

In order to manage your account access and change your password you will first need to register to the service.

Visit the Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) webpage and follow the on-screen instructions to register. To sign in, use your University email address (not your username) and password. Then follow these steps:

  • Click Set it up now next to Authentication Email Address is not configured.
  • Provide an alternative e-mail address that you have access to and select email me.
  • You will then be sent a verification email to your alternative email inbox which you will need to go to and paste into the verify box on the previous webpage.
  • Once you have entered all the requested details, press Finish.

You can now change your password by clicking on your name in the top right, going to Profile and Change password

Registering for Self-Service Password Reset using the mobile application

  • On your mobile device, visit the play or app store and download the Microsoft Authenticator application.
  • On your laptop or desktop computer, open a web browser and go to the mobile application registration page.
  • Sign in using your University email address (not your username) and password.
  • You will be presented with a message saying More information required.
  • Press Next.
  • Select Mobile app from the top drop down box.
  • Choose how you wish to use the mobile app from the two options available below:

Receive notification for verification. You’ll need to select Approve or Deny on your mobile phone.

Use verification code. The Accounts screen of the app shows you your account name and a six-digit verification code. For additional security, the verification code changes every 30 seconds preventing you from using the same code twice.

Please note that the verification code will be used when trying to unlock or reset your account. Either of the options can be configured when trying to access your security details.

  • Then click Set-up.
  • The Configure mobile app screen will appear with a QR code that you will need to scan using your mobile device within the Microsoft Authenticator app.
  • Using the app on your mobile device, go to the Accounts screen.
  • Choose Add account followed by Work or school account.
  • You will then be able to scan the QR code on your computer screen, then press Next.
  • Wait until you see the message 'Mobile app has been configured for notification and verification codes.' before clicking Next.
  • You will receive a notification on your mobile device based on the option you selected previously.
  • Choose your country from the drop-down list and enter your mobile number.
  • Click Finished.

You can now change your password by clicking on your name in the top right, going to Profile and Change password

To change your password

If your password is due to expire or if you need to change it for security reasons:

  • Visit the Self-Service Password Reset webpage  (SSPR).
  • Log in using your University email address and password.
  • Choose Change Password.
  • Type in your old password.
  • Enter a new one into the relevant boxes.

Choosing a new password

For security reasons, we recommend that you choose a strong password which is easy for you to remember and yet hard for someone to guess or crack using software.

Use the following guidelines to create your new password: 

  • It must be a minimum of 10 characters.
  • It cannot contain common words such as 'password' or part of your name.
  • Make it unique. Don’t change it to something that can be easily guessed and don’t make it the same as the password for another account, whether it be for Hotmail, Facebook or any other service. 
  • We suggest you select a phrase that you will easily remember and then strip out the spaces between words. This can be something like a line from a song or book that wouldn’t be obvious to others.

Forgotten password or locked out

If you have forgotten your password or if you have become locked out of your Office365 account, simply:

  • Visit the Forgotten password webpage.
  • Enter your email address and complete the security task.
  • Press Next.
  • Choose the option you are having trouble with and click Next.
  • Click on the email button which will send a verification code to the alternative email address you provided when registering for the service.
  • Check your alternative email inbox.
  • Provide the verification code requested.
  • Click Next
  • You will now be able to change your password, or unlock your account.

Non Office365 accounts.

The new Self-Service Password Reset service works with all accounts except for:

  • Examiner accounts (Accounts with a username starting with Examiner).
  • Open University accounts (Accounts with a username starting with Open).
  • External account such as Solent Guest Wi-Fi and exam accounts.

If you have any of the above accounts you will need to use the old SSPR service.
