Building a media profile is a key part of an academic career; find out how honing your media writing skills with The Conversation can help.

Solent University is a member of The Conversation, an independent media platform that sources news and views from the academic and research community. Their team of professional editors work with our academics to write short articles for publication, which are then often republished. Since joining a year ago, Solent academics have published 24 articles and generated over 400,000 reads across a variety of online and print news platforms.

This workshop will provide a broad introduction to writing for a public audience, look at different types of articles, and explain how to pitch your ideas to The Conversation. Following a brief demo of the online editor, participants will work on writing pitches based on ideas they have brought with them.

Participant outcomes

  • Identify good ideas to hone into stories
  • Understand the style, tone and structure of articles written for the public
  • Learn to consider what elements of research and expertise could interest the public, and how to communicate it
  • Gain familiarity of the aims, structure, way of working and benefits of The Conversation
  • Become familiar with how to navigate the site editor and how to use metrics to track engagement

You don’t have to be actively engaged in research to get involved - if you have an idea for an article, working with The Conversation can help build your external profile as an expert in your field.
