Know where to look

career-signpostMost jobs are now advertised online or on social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. There are lots of websites with graduate jobs listings, and some professions have specialist sites.

National graduate schemes

It’s never too early to start your job search in your final year as some national graduate schemes have deadlines as early as October. Many (but not all) of these require a minimum of a 2:1 to apply. Some also have a UCAS points minimum requirement.

Solent Graduate Jobs

Solent students and graduates need to register on Solent Graduate Jobs (SGJ) to be matched with work experience, part time jobs, placements, graduate opportunities and internships. SGJ will keep you up-to date with relevant posts via an email matching service so you may apply to the employer directly. Some job vacancies are exclusive to Solent students and graduates.

Remember, don't use your student email address for this, as you won't be able to use it after you leave Solent.

Using recruitment agencies

Many graduates find work through recruitment agencies. You should approach them in a professional manner, as if you were approaching a company directly for work.

A few points to keep in mind: 

  • Use the Recruitment and Employment Confederation to identify reliable agencies
  • You should not be charged by the agency for finding you work. However some agencies will charge for training
  • Specify what companies you don’t want them to contact – eg your current employer 
  • Make sure the agencies you contact are appropriate for your skill level.

Work abroad

To work in most countries in Europe you will not need a work permit and you may have the same rights as their nationals. For other countries you will need to check their individual requirements. The directgov website allows you to search for jobs internationally. 

Social networking

Employers are increasingly using social media to source candidates for employment, and to investigate those they are considering hiring.

Solent University graduate schemes

Solent University offers exclusive graduate opportunities for its alumni each year. These are advertised on Solent Graduate Jobs.

Make speculative applications

  • Use the types of work section in and information on professional association sites to find out about what is going on in your particular area of work. 
  • Are you considering both private and public sector employers? 
  • Focus your efforts on the organisations that interest you the most. Ten quality speculative applications will generally yield better results that making 100 general, unfocussed applications. 
  • Are you finding only senior jobs that require more experience than you've got? Why not contact them to see if there are any junior positions, if you can do work experience there or even conduct an information interview with a recent graduate entrant? Emphasise relevant skills and knowledge in your approach and ensure you demonstrate why you are interested in the company.
