Description

Solent Futures supports students and graduates who want to set up a business or work for themselves. We run a varied programme of workshops throughout the year - they are all advertised here on the careers events pages.

You may have a desire to work for yourself either as a freelancer or setting up your own business and would like to find out about the legal requirements and where to start.  At Solent Futures, we offer some short practical sessions on what you need to know. We also offer an Online Enterprise Resource where you can review some of this information and post questions. 

Introduction to Freelancing/Setting Up a Business 

  • Legal requirements – Sole Trader/Limited Company/Social Enterprise – how to decide which one best suits your business model.
  • Registering with HMRC* to pay your tax    *Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs
  • Registering for VAT* - when do you need to do this.
  • Setting up an accounting system for your business and the basics of allowable expenses.
  • Protecting your idea.
  • Legal insurance requirements.
