Communication, participation and consultation

Being successful at health and safety means that everyone needs to be actively involved.

Talking, listening and co-operating helps:

  • Develop a positive health and safety culture where risks are managed sensibly.
  • Identify joint solutions to problems.
  • Bring about improvements in staff health and safety and in overall efficiency.Participation
  • The University to comply with legal requirements.

Aim

To develop a workplace where everyone:

  • Feels that they can participate in decisions taken about health and safety.
  • Can report issues of concern openly, in a 'no-blame' culture

Managers should operate in an open and transparent way to encourage participation in health and safety issues. There should always be a channel whereby those affected by a health and safety decision can have a say about that decision.

Including these mechanisms for effective communication, participation and consultation in schools and services is a key performance indicator. Directors will need to include this in their annual health and safety report.
