Leaving residences early

Withdrawing or transferring from your course

If you are suspending your studies or withdrawing from your course and leaving the university then you can be released from your contract and you will only have to pay a four week notice period.

You will need to let us know in writing of your intention to leave the student residences and you can do this either by emailing the accommodation office at or by coming to the accommodation office and filling out the vacating student residences form.

Your four week notice period will be calculated from the date we receive the written notification.

You can continue to live in the residences until the end of your notice period but if you do choose to leave earlier then we may be able to sell your room to someone wishing to move in and then you'll only pay up to the date that they move in.

Termination of contract

Only in exceptional circumstances will you be allowed to terminate your contract. Consideration is only normally given to very ill residents but evidence will need to be supplied.

Moving out into the private sector

If you decide part way through your contract that you want to move out into the private sector or back home but still carry on as a university student, then you need to be aware that you will still be liable for your accommodation fees until we can sell your room.

You can apply to go on the resell list by notifying the accommodation office in writing and we will endeavour to match your room to any student who wishes to move into the student residences. There is no guarantee that we will be able to resell your room and we cannot predict what timescale it will take to find someone.

Check out the private accommodation portal pages for help and advice on moving into the private sector.

We aim to process any refund within ten working days of the notice period. The refund will be issued in the same way it was paid to us and that's usually either by credit/debit card or direct debit.
