Access Solent

Supporting You at University

We aim to remove barriers to learning and enable students to enjoy the access1full use of all facilities at Southampton Solent University.

You are encouraged to declare any:

  • specific learning difficulties (eg dyslexia, dyspraxia)
  • chronic or long term medical conditions
  • physical or sensory impairments
  • mental health conditions
  • autistic spectrum declarations (eg Aspergers)

Learning Support

Learning support includes:

  • Appropriate provision for individual academic-related needs, eg exam arrangements, dyslexia tutor, mentor, note-taker,
  • Individual assistance in the library.
  • Confidential advice and guidance with study problems.
  • Liaison with other departments, organisations and Local Education Authorities.
  • Assistive technology available in main IT resource Centres and Assistive Technology Centres.
  • Guidance in the use of assistive software and short-term loan of equipment.
  • Screening and assessment, eg dyslexia.

Accessible venues and accommodation

  • Significant investments in accommodation facilities include: vibrating pillows for deaf students, hoists and purpose-built rooms with ground floor access. We also have larger rooms for students who may just need extra space for essential equipment and can provide fridges in bedrooms for medical purposes.
  • Further necessary adaptations can be made following an Occupational Therapist's assessment.
  • Students can agree individual Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPS) with the University's Health, Safety and Environment Manager.
