Hypnotherapy sessions are free to students of the University, for issues that may be affecting you or your coursework caused by stress, anxiety, panic or difficulties with relaxation.

Hypnosis (hypnotic trance) is an altered state of consciousness in which it is possible to communicate with the subconscious mind. Believe it or not, it is a very common state, which everybody, to some degree, experiences every day.
It occurs when our conscious mind is absorbed or distracted. You know how it is when you get thoroughly lost in a beautiful piece of music, or a good book, or a daydream, or the TV. Your attention is completely captured and everyday reality fades into the background as your mind carries you away to a different world of the imagination. You are still conscious, but your consciousness is temporarily altered. Well, that is a form of trance. In fact we all go through a similar phase just before we go to sleep. It’s a very natural and normal state of deep relaxation, which we all experience and drift in and out of from time to time.
The hypnotherapy sessions involve you being guided into this same relaxed state of consciousness which then enables you and the hypnotherapist to tackle the issues that are affecting you. Because this hypnotic trance state is bypassing the conscious mind and communicating with the subconscious mind, successful and significant results are achieved very quickly.
Because a hypnotic trance is a very natural and normal state to achieve, it is a very pleasant feeling of calmness and deep relaxation. Every muscle in your body becomes pleasantly relaxed and all tension disappears.
Contrary to popular belief, when you are hypnotised you are not asleep or unconscious. You will normally have your eyes closed, but you can still hear and feel and speak. Indeed, your concentration and awareness actually become heightened. You are, in fact, in complete control, a heightened sense of control, throughout the whole time you are hypnotised, and therefore, you can come back to complete conscious awareness at any time you choose.
Hypnotherapy is beneficial for many issues, and for most people. Here at the counselling service, we offer hypnotherapy sessions to people who may want help with the following:
You will be offered an Assessment appointment, at which you will complete a confidential questionnaire, and a hypnotherapist will discuss with you whether hypnotherapy is appropriate for you. If hypnotherapy is right for you, you will be informed how many hypnotherapy sessions you will require, although in most cases this will only need to be a maximum of two to three sessions. You will also be asked to sign a consent form confirming you give permission to be hypnotised.
If hypnotherapy is not right for you, your hypnotherapist will discuss other forms of support available to help you manage or resolve the issues affecting you.

The hypnotherapist is a member of the General Hypnotherapy Register, and National Council of Hypnotherapists and works within the professional standards and Code of Ethics as laid out by these professional organisations.
You can download the most current copy of the Professional Standards and Code of Ethics or copies are available from the Students 1st Information Centre (RM050).
Hypnotherapy sessions are highly confidential, and your hypnotherapist will discuss the limits to confidentiality with you at your Assessment appointment.
There is a qualified hypnotherapist within the counselling service who provides the hypnotherapy sessions, and is committed to and involved in ongoing professional development.
