Registering with a doctor

In order to have access to NHS Services, you need to be registered with a doctor in the area where you live.

When you register with your new doctor, you will be given a leaflet or booklet detailing the services provided by the surgery. Keep this for reference.

If you require a routine appointment, you would normally expect to wait a few days. However, in circumstances where you are seriously ill and need immediate treatment, please ensure that this is made clear to the receptionist and you will be offered an emergency appointment.

If you fail to register with a doctor, you may find yourself liable for the cost of emergency treatment, especially if you require a doctor to visit you outside normal surgery hours.

nurseInformation For new students

If you live locally and travel in to the University each day you should remain with your existing family doctor for all primary health needs. If you move to Southampton when you become a student, you will be required to register with a doctor in the part of the city in which you are living.

Students in halls of residence and those living close to the University are strongly advised to register with St Marys Surgery. Registration with doctors will normally be carried out during the health induction sessions.

You can print off a registration form at the following site:

If you live in the Polygon you can register with Walnut Tree Surgery:

Should you miss registration at that time, Students 1st has a list of doctors close to you. Alternatively, the NHS website provides a list of services nearest to your postcode.

Information For returning students

If you have moved house over the summer (or out of halls), you need to ensure that your NHS registration is still valid with the medical practice where you were registered last year. This can be done by notifying your surgery of the change of address.
