Groups and workshops

Students 1st Support and the Counselling Service run a variety of free workshops and groups, available to help students with specific issues. For many people, and many difficulties, working in a group can be the most effective form of help; it can be really helpful to see that you are not alone with an issue, and working on shared concerns provides opportunities for increased understanding.

All participants of both workshops and groups will be expected to listen and speak to one another with consideration and respect. There is a myth that being part of a group will mean baring your soul to all other members - this is not the case! You share as much, or as little, as you feel is appropriate for you at the time.

Support groups are designed and themed to offer support to people with a shared experience, for example addiction or loneliness. You will meet with 4 to 8 other students with whom you share concerns, and talk about your unique journey, share experiences and coping strategies. The counsellor will facilitate the group to ensure that there is no judgement of you or your peers.

Support Groups run throughout the year and include managing anxiety, eating disorders, lonliness, addictions, and building confidence.

Once you have submitted your online assessment form you will be contacted to confirm your place in the group. You will meet with your group and facilitating counsellor at the same time/day for 4 or 6 weeks (depending on the group you choose). Striving to attend all sessions is really important for your experience but also to the other group members.

Workshops are designed to teach and inform a group of people about a certain subject or topic.  Attending a workshop is a great way to learn new ways to deal with situations or develop a deeper understanding of something that may be new to you.

Workshops run throughout the year and include managing academic stress, presentation anxiety, and procrastination.

To book your place on a workshop complete and submit this workshop booking form.
