Unpaid placement support grant

The Unpaid Placement Support Grant will reopen in October 2017

This grant is means tested and is available to support students who have been offered a short term unpaid placement between 10 – 20 working days, who may be prevented from doing so, due to their financial situation.

Placements must last a minimum of 10 working days (or 100 hours) and a maximum of 20. If it is over this students may still apply but only the maximum of 20 working days will be considered.  The fund is limited and unfortunately not all applications can be successful.

Please be aware if you are undertaking a long term unpaid placement this will affect your ability to work and the fund cannot be expected to cover your costs.

How you are assessed

The nature of your placement, the effect it has on your ability to work and any costs incurred whilst on placement, will be taken into consideration for assessment. Placements outside the UK may affect the level of award you receive, as all costs cannot be covered. Priority will be given in the following order, to those:

  • from low income backgrounds (under £25k).
  • who receive the student finance maintenance grant (pre-2016 entrants).
  • who receive the means tested maintenance loan.
  • who receive the basic non-means tested maintenance loan.
  • who receive funding from another source/government/sponsor.

If you have any queries regarding the fund please contact the student funding team.
