Support Grant

The Support Grant (formally known as the Access to Learning Fund) will reopen in October 2017.

The Support Grant is a non-repayable grant for students who are in financial hardship.

It can help towards:

  • Living costs.
  • Childcare.
  • Travel.
  • Accommodation.
  • Household expenses.
  • Books and course equipment.

Please note this list is not exhaustive.

Unfortunately the grant cannot help pay towards tuition fees or those who have just mismanaged their finances. We can offer money management advice on this.

For students who have only been able to take out the non-means tested part of the maintenance loan, due to a high household income, they cannot be fully compensated for the lack of parental contribution by the fund, but are encouraged to still apply.

Who can apply to the Support Grant?

Students enrolled on a course for 2017/18 at Southampton Solent University and are:

  • Full-time / part-time UK  'home' undergraduate students, in receipt of their full student funding, or
  • Full-time / part-time UK 'home' postgraduate students (if part-time, must be studying at least 50% (25% for disabled students) of a full-time course (that is 60 credits) and in receipt of their postgraduate loan
  • Full-time students must have received the first payment of their full entitlement of maintenance loan.
  • EU students who are in receipt of full UK funding (including maintenance loan).
  • International, EU, Channel Island / IOM students cannot apply*

* EU and International Access Fund
If you are experiencing a short term financial emergency which is unforeseen and beyond your control then you should come and see the funding team in the first instance. You will need to demonstrate that you had initially made adequate financial arrangements to support yourself throughout your studies, including paying your tuition fees and that your current situation is temporary.  The funding adviser may then give you an application form.

When can I apply?

Students can apply from:

  • Monday 9 October 2017 until Friday 22 June 2018  (by 3pm) or
  • until funds are exhausted, whichever is the sooner.

Application forms

If you are unhappy with the result of your Support Grant application you can appeal the decision.

You can contact the chair of the panel, Joanna Wakely, by emailing: student.funding@solent.ac.uk

Other grants available

Course costs support grant

Students who compulsory course costs (not general costs such as books, stationary etc), may be able to apply to the course costs support grant.

Unpaid placement support grant

This grant is available to support students who have been offered an unpaid placement, between 10 and 20 working days, who due to their poor financial circumstances, may be prevented from doing so.

Short-term emergency loans

An emergency loan is repayable, and interest free.  It may be given to assist with basic living costs, before you receive your Maintenance Loan and if you are experiencing a genuine unforeseen emergency i.e. delay of student funding. Once you have received your Maintenance Loan we would recommend you apply to the Support Grant as above if you are in financial difficulty.

For full eligibilty criteria please refer to the leaflet “Emergency short-term loans – Terms and Conditions”.

To apply for a short term loan, you must complete the application form and see a Student Funding Adviser with it completed including all the evidence as requested on the form.  Loans are discretionary and not given on demand.

Failure to repay the loan can result in:

  • The debt being passed to a debt collection agency and
  • a £50 late payment fee being added to your student account and
  • no further loans given from the university and
  • you will not be able to attend your graduation ceremony.
