Introducing the Research and Innovation Office
The Research and Innovation team is responsible for developing and supporting research, innovation and knowledge exchange across the University and with external partners and stakeholders.
Research, innovation and knowledge exchange at Solent is organised around four thematic, multidisciplinary areas that are intended to facilitate excellence and collaboration both within Solent and with partner organisations, as well as to address issues of local, national and global importance.
The Research and Innovation team look forward to working with our research, innovation and knowledge exchange communities across the six schools and the four hubs to build and develop a research-active and research-informed university.
Director of Research and Innovation
The Research and Innovation team organises an ongoing series of researcher development activities and support for Solent staff and students through the Researcher Development Programme (RDP) as well as running the annual Research and Innovation Conference and the Solent Research Challenge.
Solent’s Researcher Development Programme offers a range of opportunities for Solent staff and research students to develop research, professional and personal skills focusing on four key areas of knowledge, behaviours and attributes of effective and highly skilled researchers:
- Knowledge and intellectual abilities.
- Personal effectiveness.
- Research governance and organisation.
- Engagement, influence and impact.
The RDP caters for all levels of experience, from doctoral researchers to early career researchers to those with more experience. There are a range of options and you can choose the activities which are right for you at each stage of your research and innovation development journey.
Solent’s RDP is based on the national Researcher Development Framework (developed by Vitae) and is guided by Solent’s Research and Innovation strategy.
Bids and funding
The Research and Innovation team supports Solent staff with preparing research proposals and other bid development, as well as the submission and management of awards.
To help you find the right funding opportunities for you and then to navigate the process of preparing and submitting a bid, we maintain a Solent Bidding Guide and we offer a tool called Pivot, which is a research funding opportunities database.
The Solent Bidding Guide provides a series of links to the websites, systems and documents that you need in order to submit a successful bid for research and innovation funding. It can be used as a checklist of what to do and the order in which to do things.
Working with business
The Research and Innovation team supports Solent staff to work with external partners and stakeholders to develop research, innovation and knowledge exchange opportunities including:
- Knowledge exchange partnerships (KTPs).
- Innovation vouchers.
- Collaborative research.
- Local enterprise partnership (LEP).
We can guide and support you in finding partners, setting up contracts and engaging in multi-stakeholder partnerships.
The Research and Innovation team supports the research and innovation governance framework at Solent. This includes a range of policies, regulations, principles and standards of good practice that aim to achieve, and continuously improve, research and innovation quality.
Research governance aims to:
- Safeguard participants in research.
- Protect researchers and investigators by providing a clear framework within which to work.
- Enhance ethical and scientific quality.
- Mitigate risk.
- Monitor practice and performance.
- Promote good practice and ensure that lessons are learned.
The Research and Innovation team manages the University’s research ethics approval process, assists with intellectual property (IP) concerns, manages the REF process and maintains the University’s research information management system.
