Step-by-step guide to inter-library loans

Step one - find the details of the book or journal article you want

Make a note of the details of the item you want to request:
  • For books - author, title, publisher and date of publication
  • For journal articles - journal title, article title, author, volume, issue, page nos and date

Step two - check the library catalogue

  • Check our catalogue to make sure the item is not already in the library collection or available online via the library's databases
  • Check Google and Google Scholar as the article may be freely available online

For more help using library eresources and finding articles, contact your information librarian. There may be lots of other useful materials available that they can help you locate.

Step three - submit an inter-library loan request form

Please note - you can only submit a maximum of six requests at any one time.

Complete our online inter-library loan request form:

Inter-library loan request form (online form)

By completing this form, you are agreeing to the copyright declaration stating that the item will not be used for commercial purposes.

Step four - arrival of requested items

Secure electronic delivery of journal articles

Most of our journal article requests are supplied by the British Library. They are usually supplied within 3-10 days. These are secure electronic documents, delivered to you by email. These emails will be sent to your University email address only.

The first time you use the British Library's service you will be prompted to download a plug-in that will allow you to open the document. Full instructions are included in the email we send you.

Remember:

  • You must access the document within 14 days.
  • We recommend that you print off a copy of the document immediately.
  • You can print the document only once.
  • You can download the document to your computer, laptop or tablet. It can then be viewed on that device only for up to three years.

Arrival of the document in your email box constitutes delivery and copyright law prohibits us from providing a second copy.

Books and other non-digital items

For books and other items (some of which may be for use in the library only) we will email you to let you know when they are available.

These items can be collected from the document delivery office on the ground floor of the Mountbatten Library (Room ML014) during core library hours (see below).
