Overdue Library Material

It is your responsibility to keep the books in date. The Library does not charge monetary fines, but imposes a Penalty Point system.

It's easy to avoid accruing penalty points as we offer several different ways to renew your loans.

Penalty Points for late returns or renewals

If you return or renew library material late you will automatically receive penalty points. Anyone reaching 100 penalty points will be blocked from borrowing or renewing library material for a maximum of One Week.

Penalty points accrue at the following rates -

1 week and 3 week loans 1 point per day overdue or 3 points per day if item has been reserved
Short loans

1 day loans - 20 points for late return (must be back by 11.45pm day after issue)

Special Loans  (e.g. DVDs) 20 points for late return
Items on day loan  (e.g. laptops, newspapers)

Laptops - 20 points for late return (must be back by 11.30pm)

Newspapers - 20 points for late return (must be back by 6.45pm)

Study carrel keys 20 points for late return
Invoices  If an overdue loan reaches the stage when we issue you with an invoice for it, penalty points will continue to accrue until the item is returned or paid for.

You can check your penalty points by logging in to the  My Account area, accessed via the library catalogue.

Please ask library staff if you have any queries about penalty points or about your loans or email us on:
library.loans@solent.ac.uk

What happens if my items are overdue

overdueYou will receive an "overdue summary" notice if an item on loan to you becomes overdue. This notice is sent to your University email address.

You should receive a courtesy notice warning that your books are about to become overdue 1 day before the due date . Please act promptly when you get a reminder and you can avoid accumulating penalty points.

If the item is not renewed or returned further reminders are sent via email and finally a request to pay the replacement cost would be sent to either your term-time/home address (students) or your departmental address (staff).

Overdue items that you are invoiced for, will have to be returned before any further renewals or issues can be considered.

Remember: it's easy to avoid getting points and being blocked as there are lots of ways to renew your books - either online, by phoning us or asking at the loans desk.
