Sharing full text documents

Whilst it is now very straightforward to download, print and share the full text of articles within some eresources and bibliographic software systems, both internally and externally, this is rarely permitted in terms of copyright. If you decide to utilise fulltext sharing options, please note the following:

You may not

  • Share any library digitised materials (digidocs) either internally or externally. This is stated on our document cover sheets. All digitised materials must be downloaded by an individual student on a particular course of study only.
  • Share any of our subscription content externally (unless an individual eresource licence permits this).

You must

  • Ensure you stick within fair dealing limits when downloading, saving, attaching and importing individual items from subscription resources (usually one article per journal issue or 5 per cent of a complete work).
  • Only share fulltext documents within our institution if a particular eresource licence permits this. For more information about licence terms and conditions relating to fulltext sharing, contact your information librarian.

As yet, there has been no test case demonstrating that the sharing of full text documents, internally or externally, is acceptable under existing copyright exceptions.

Whilst using documents for personal use is acceptable, sharing these full text documents may not count as personal use or come under the illustration for instruction exceptions. You must therefore always refer to individual licences.

If you are in any doubt, do not share full text materials with others.
