I am responsible, as the Deputy University Librarian (Information Services and Systems), for ensuring that the library supports customers in terms of access to the right resources, their ability to use those resources and effective use of technology to increase access to such resources. I also look at the opportunities presented by IT systems to provide good circulation services, efficent purchasing and control of access to and discovery of eResources.

I work with colleagues to ensure

  • that we purchase the correct resources to support courses and individual study
  • we create easy access to eresources via use of systems such as SFX and Metaib.
  • maintain access to such resources
  • develop the library portal to be an effective source of information 
  • provide subject support to students and advice on using resources via the Information Services Team

I  have overall responsibility for the following services offered by my colleagues:

  • subject support offered by the Information team
  • Library audio-visual collection and tv programme recording service
  • Library Management System and other information systems
  • Library Portal
  • SEA - the Institutional Repository.  

Career Background

I studied for a degree in Archaeology and Geography at the University of Leeds followed by postgraduate qualifications in Library and Information Studies at Liverpool Polytechnic.

I worked briefly at the Harding Law Library, University of Birmingham and the Royal Geographical Society before spending 10 years working as a Law Librarian for top London law firms. I came to work at Southampton Solent University in 1998 supporting Law and latterly law and electronic developments. Since joining I have completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Practice here at the University in 2003 and in 2004, a MA in Education by dissertation at the University of Southampton, researching information literacy. I moved to the post of Digital Library Developments Manager in August 2007 and to my current post in July 2010.

Professional qualifications include Membership of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I am an asessor for HEA Fellowship applications.  


My interests include the use of technology to enhance the use of Library resources and information literacy. I also have an interest in the changing role of the subject librarian and contributed a chapter : The subject specialist in higher education - a review of the literature to the following book:
