Safety within the library

Safety of children within the library

Any visitor to the library with young children in their care will be given help by staff to carry out any business on the ground floor i.e. collection of books from other floors or accompany the visitor in the lift to the appropriate area. To ensure their safety, children must be accompanied at all times while in the building.

What to do in the event of an evacuation emergency

In the event of an emergency such as a fire, the alarm will sound and staff will ask you to vacate the building.

Please assist us by leaving as quickly as possible via the nearest fire exit. All exits are clearly marked and we ask you to take note of the exit nearest to your workstation.

If you have mobility difficulties please make yourself known to a member of library staff who will guide you to a refuge point. Refuge area now have communication points installed so that you can alert Estates and Facilities staff to your location in the event of a real emergency.

Please note: Alarms are normally tested at 8.30am on Tuesday morning in the library

Look after your property whilst working in the library

When working in the study areas never leave valuables in your bags or on display.

Always carry your wallet/purse and phone with you, even if you only intend to leave your desk for a few seconds.

Lost property

We keep lost items for no more than 60 days. If there is a name we will try and contact the owner by email or phone. Expensive or important items / documents are normally taken to main reception in Andrews within two days of being found.

Suspected theft

Should any item be lost or stolen whilst in the library please inform library staff immediately who will ask you to complete an incident form.

You are also advised to report any thefts to the police and obtain an incident number from them as that is essential for making an insurance claim. If the police ask about access to any CCTV evidence, they will need to make a formal request for this by contacting the information and compliance officer on 023 8201 3229 or by email at freedom.information@solent.ac.uk.

Please look after your campus card

If your card is lost or stolen please inform library staff. It is important you report the loss of your card to us as soon as possible as you will be liable for any items taken out on your card until it is reported lost.

An email will be sent to the card holder if the card is found in the library.

Closed Circuit Television

For the protection and security of library users, staff and property a CCTV system is in operation in the library. The system is controlled and operated by Estates and Facilities and follows the requirements of the Data Protection Act.

Please note that library and learning services staff do not have access to the system so please address any queries to the Estates help desk via estates.helpdesk@solent.ac.uk
