Information librarian support

The information librarians’ role is to:

Assist in developing search strategies to find relevant information

Provide guidance on how to conduct a preliminary search or literature review

Help develop effective search terms eg topic analysis, ways of identifying keywords, key authors and use of citations etc

Explain general evaluation criteria of sources eg currency, authority, bias.

Help identify a possible range of sources relevant to information needs, with the emphasis on quality sources such as: 

  • Print and non-print resources relevant to subject within our print and electronic collections
  • Other major collections and sources

Advise on use of eresources: 

  • How to access eresources using passwords, both on- and off-campus
  • Use of advanced search features
  • Using advanced features of databases such as exporting references, setting up alerts,etc

Advise on referencing and avoiding plagiarism:

  • Use of bibliographic software
  • Relevant referencing styles

Identify further sources of information and assistance:

  • Study skills collection
  • Learning support staff 
  • Inter-library loans service
  • Access arrangements to other collections

The information librarians can also assist with information skills training sessions. While they will do their best to accommodate last minute requests for training sessions, lecturers should give adequate notice to allow full customisation of training to their requirements.

Information on relevant topics and forthcoming assignments will further help to ensure that sessions are tailored to their needs

The role does not include:

Advising on choice of assignment topic or evaluating or modifying the content of an assignment

Providing content for assignments or undertaking database searches for students independent of their engagement in the process

Reviewing text or reference lists in order to advise about grammar, spelling, punctuation, style or layout. Some support in this area is available from the learning skills tutor.
