Nick Papaconstantinou joined Learning Technologies (LT) as an e-Learning Support Officer at the beginning of 2008. Prior to joining Solent University he worked at Southampton City College for six years in a similar role.
His primary role at Solent is helping academic staff to use Solent Online Learning (SOL) - our Virtual Learning Environment - with their students.
As a perennial early adopter, Nick also has broad knowledge of other web technologies, and often advises staff, students and LT colleagues on the use of technologies and third-party tools as diverse as Twitter, Wordpress (and other blogging platforms), audio podcasting, YouTube/Vimeo and integral to most of these, RSS.
Nick has also co-ordinated with the Business Applications Team to form the processes that allow each Unit to have a site on myCourse, and semi-automate the enrolment of students to those units, as well as overseeing and taking part in a project in 2011 - with other eLearning Support Officers - to bring similar consistency and enrolment functionality to courses and programmes. He also enjoys the challenge of co-ordinating many of the LT's summer myCourse housekeeping processes, which involve creating workable systems, and simplifying complex ideas to the point where they can be communicated to a wide range of people.
Like all e-Learning Support Officers, he is available to, and works well with, both academic and administrative staff across the University, and regularly delivers one-on-one training and larger sessions to colleagues.
"Teachers already use technology all the time - from the board rubber to the overhead projector to the photocopier - and I get satisfaction from making new web technologies as invisible and intuitive a part of the process of building pedagogy as those legacy technologies."
Nick also lives on the internet in his spare time, when he isn't on the sofa with his wife and dogs. He runs several websites, is co-creator and co-host of MOMBcast (the best comicbook podcast recorded on a Thursday night in Southampton), creator and curator of the writing website Elephant Words, and likes to write, a lot.
