SolentNet wireless network

Wireless NetworkThe University has been installing a new fully-pervasive wireless solution between November 2014 and March 2015, responding to feedback from students and staff.

The new wireless uses the very latest 802.11ac technology, enabling very high connection speeds, as well as supporting the older a/b/g/n standards. It is also future-proofed for further developments of the 802.11ac standard.

The new wireless provides a high level of performance in all areas, including high-density areas such as Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) where the number of simultaneous device connections is very high.

As well as being fully pervasive, the wireless has been designed to be highly resilient so if one access point fails, there will be another close by to use.

You can access our high-speed wireless network from anywhere on the City Campus (East Park Terrace, Sir James Matthews Building and Below Bar) and specific buildings at the Warsash Maritime Academy.

Automatic connection with JoinNow

iOS, OS X, Android, Windows, Kindle, Chrome and Linux devices* can all connect automatically using the JoinNow service.

We recommend that all staff and students use JoinNow as the primary wireless connection method. JoinNow installs security certificates onto the connecting devices which enables secure, encrypted access to the wireless.

For further details of how to connect see Automatic Connection

In the unlikely event that the JoinNow service does not appear to work then please contact the Learning Resource Centres via the telephone numbers provided or via e-mail:

*iOS 2.0 +, OS X 10.5+, Android 2.1+, Windows RT, XP, Vista, 7 and 8.
