Final year - what's your plan?

It's time to make it happen!

Don't worry that you have left it too late to find a graduate job. There are actions you can take throughout your final year that will help you to make a successful job search. Some are small, some more time consuming, but all are recommended by the Solent Futures team at Solent.

final-year-girl-01Top ten tips for success

1. Work hard on your course

Employers will want to know about the skills you have gained at university, and many graduate schemes only accept applications from students and graduates expecting a 2:1 or higher.

2. Be flexible and have a plan B, C and D

Find out what you can do with your degree - you may be surprised at your options.

3. Learn to market yourself with a professional LinkedIn profile and a winning CV!

Act now by going to www.linkedin.com. Jobs linked to the skills you have listed will be emailed to you automatically so make sure your profile is fully developed.

4. Consider having a professional mentor

Kick start your career and develop your connections. Applications for the Solent Mentoring programme are accepted throughout your final year (but apply early to maximise the benefits of the programme).

5. Register today on a range of recruitment sites

Remember that many graduate schemes have application deadlines early in the academic year - some are as early as November. We recommend prospects.ac.uk, milkround.com, targetjobs.co.uk and Solent Graduate Jobs but a specialist job site may be more appropriate for some courses.

6. Don’t limit your search

Many jobs are never advertised so reach these with a speculative application or by networking. Joining LinkedIn is a good first step.

7. Take the time to target your job application

Target your application to the organisation you are applying to. Attend a CV workshop for tips from our experienced advisers.

8. Practice your interview skills

If you want a 40 minute mock interview these can be booked online through CareerBox (myCourse log in required).

9. Attend our employability workshops

We run workshops in the Solent Futures Centre (RM001) throughout the year covering a wide range of topics. Go to the events listing pages.

10. Thinking of starting your own business?

Visit Enterprising You for lots of free resources, and stop into the Solent Futures Centre to see if you qualify for help from Solent University.

Find exclusive opportunities for Solent graduates

Each year Solent University funds a number of graduate opportunities which are only open to Solent graduates.

These are for a minimum of six months, but many have led on to permanent employment. They are in a number of industry areas, and opportunities are available both within the University and with external employers in the South.

These are only advertised on Solent Graduate Jobs.
