Setting goals

Goal setting is the process of thinking about a future goal and the steps you would take to turn your goal into a reality.

In terms of career goals, maybe you’re aspiring towards a particular job, postgraduate study or owning your own business.  Whichever path you want to take one practical solution is to work backwards from the goal to where you are now.  For example, when you find your perfect job look at the job description and highlight the requirements you don’t yet meet.  Now think about the steps you could take to increase your skills to match those required.  By completing a series of short term goals you will step closer to achieving your long term goal. These steps might include completing a work placement, getting involved in a volunteering project, or undertaking some further study.  Depending on your aspiration have a realistic think about how long it will take you to get there. Some goals can be achieved quickly, some take years.

The following handout takes you through three stages of goal setting.
