You may have a desire to work for yourself either as a freelancer or setting up your own business and would like to find out about the legal requirements and where to start.  At Solent Futures, we offer some short practical sessions on what you need to know. We also offer an Online Enterprise Resource where you can review some of this information and post questions. 

The following session is an information filled training day. Booking is essential.

The session consists of:  

Introduction to Freelancing/Setting Up a Business  

  • Legal requirements – Sole Trader/Limited Company/Social Enterprise – how to decide which one best suits your business model.  

  • Registering with HMRC* to pay your tax    *Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. 

  • Registering for VAT* - when do you need to do this.  

  • Setting up an Accounting System for your business and the basics of allowable expenses. 

  • Protecting your idea.  

  • Legal Insurance Requirements.  

Business Planning  

  • Developing a Business Plan – brainstorming phase, tools you can use working with the Business Model Canvas. 

  • Market Testing your Business Model before turning it into a business plan. 

  • Turning your idea into a written business plan – what you need to include. 

  • Preparing a cashflow forecast.  

Basic Accounting for Business 

  • The basics of small business accounting.  

  • Understanding the terminologies and what you as a small business owner or freelancer need to know. 

  • How to set up an accounting system and keep your day to day accounts. 

  • Registering your business for digital VAT. 

  • Tax and National Insurance liabilities. 

  • Legal and financial responsibilities as a director.
