Languages

In today's international world, having even basic skills in another language and knowing something about the culture of another country is an asset that could not only help in your chosen career but also add to your personal development and enjoyment.

The Solent International Language Programme (SILP) offers a range of C+ units in foreign languages at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels in English, French, German, Italian, Chinese (Mandarin) and Spanish, all as a foreign language.

If you have learned just a little of the language before, or even none at all, you can take 20 credits on a C+ basis. (If you need to take English as a Foreign Language, or an introduction to teaching English as a foreign language, to supplement your other studies then you can also do so.)

Classes are typically 2 - 3 hours per week over the academic year and take place at a range of times. Once your language level has been determined you select the correct unit and will be allocated to a class. The precise unit code for your C+ unit will depend on the language and level of your study.

Assessment

Assessment is 100% coursework. At the lower levels this typically involves four equally-weighted in-class tests in listening, reading, speaking and writing. At higher levels this may include a portfolio of work (75%) and a 'viva' speaking test (25%).
