The Manned model ship handling facility was created for Warsash Maritime Academy as a replacement for the old facility at Marchwood.
Manned model ship handling involves using scaled models with realistic manoeuvring characteristics to enable pilots, masters and senior officers to develop their skills and understanding of the behaviour and handling of various vessel types – with an emphasis on slow speed control.
The facility is internationally recognised for its quality of maritime education and training and therefore the new facility had to reflect this prestige.
The site also had to pay a considerable amount of attention to environmental issues, including the ecology of the site, water environment, archaeology, and socio- economic issues.
This was all achieved with the added value of creating state of the art teaching facilities and staff accommodation over looking the lake.
