Faculty of the Creative Industries and Society

  • You Said We ListenedThe Solent Skillset Media Academy is to get a new home with up-to-the-minute facilities, work spaces and equipment. Part of Southampton Solent University's John Millais building is being re-vamped to create a smart, new, dedicated centre for the Solent Skillset Media Academy. The revamp is costing £1million and will be completed in September 2012.

  • We have introduced Turnitin, an online tool enabling us to provide you with quicker, better feedback, making it easier for you to submit your assignments.

School of Communications and Writing

  • We introduced new "real world" teaching activities such as the New Year, New Challenges weeks.
  • We organised more employer visits and invited more employer-focused guest speakers for 2012.
  • We have also introduced a CV boot camp.

School of Fashion

  • We organised new induction activities such as the afternoon tea party.
  • We introduced online tutorials to supplement the technical support provided to students.
  • We increased the number of our guest speakers.
  • We increased the number of live projects and implemented new opportunities.
  • We provided an extension of the input from alumni at BA & MA level.
  • We organised a networking event so that students from all levels could meet each other.
  • We introduced the IBM Innovation centre MA collaboration to the BA Fashion Management course.
  • We took students to head offices of fashion retail businesses and to more fashion industry trade shows.
  • We took you to a Fashion Management employer recruitment day.
  • We organised a graduate event so you could meet successful former students and discuss career ideas.
  • We improved late night studio opening so that you have access to specialist facilities from Monday to Friday.

Media and Fashion Styling

  • All members of staff have now a weekly drop in time for students to obtain further feedback.
  • Major project sessions have now been opened up so that the final year students can come at a time that suits them and see more than one member of staff throughout the day.
  • We have a lecture on Matthew Syed's "The Growth Mindset" implemented blogging master classes, set up LinkedIn groups for the courses and invited the Head of Global Recruitment at Alexander Mann Solutions to help with applying for jobs, developing CVs and online profiles and preparing for interviews.

Advertising

  • We have established clinics and drop in sessions, in our effort to improve the time and quality of the feedback we provide to you.

Digital Music

  • We organised a cross-programme live music event at UNIT nightclub in Southampton, where students had the opportunity to showcase their work.
  • We have also created work experience for cross-programme DJs to take part in open days and invited students to attend the "Working in the Music Industry" unit as an extra-curricular activity.
  • A cross-programme visit to Steim in Amsterdam has been planned for next December (2012).
  • Music recording studios are now open on Saturdays at the busiest points of the year.
    We’ll continue to monitor usage to make sure students get plenty of free studio time.

Journalism

  • We created a "Live Chat" service for our level 6 students.

Media Culture and Production

  • Feedback tutorials have been offered at the beginning of the academic year to all of our students.

Photography

  • We are planning to create a Photography Studio in the new Media Academy.
  • Photography has instigated a Student and Alumni blog to enhance best practice and improve industry networks.
  • Photography now has a Masters programme.

School of Media

  • In our effort to improve our guest speaker programme for 2011-12, we organised Mastering workshops, we liaised with Metropolis Studio and had guest speakers such as the English film director Sir Alan Parker, television and radio personality Zoe Ball and English comedian and actor Marcus Brigstocke.
  • We have also enhanced the work placement opportunities available through the Solent Music initiative.
  • We have also established a partnership with Bestival and our students will be taking on roles in all areas of festival production for both Bestival and sister event Camp Bestival.
  • We organised more social and performance events with DM, PMP concerts, PMRP Live Events and SMILE week.
  • We introduced the Mahara e-portfolio to give our students more online presence.
  • We gave you the opportunity to take part in the Solent Shows Off event as the bands were students of the Pop Music Performance course, the crew were mostly students of Popular Music and Record Production course, the promotion was done by Music Promotion and Pop Music Journalism students and the filming of the event was conducted by Film and TV production students as work experience.

Psychology

  • We introduced a listening / updating time during lectures so you have the opportunity to talk with your tutors for important issues you might have in mind.
  • We developed the community-based live project which students have been involved with on the Health Psychology unit.

Product Design

  • We introduced an additional feedback mechanism - "Generic Feedback" to the cohort group as to areas of good practice, common mistakes and so on. An example of this is "It was good to see that the students did conduct their own primary research and not just secondary information sources." We provide this feedback before we have had to mark all the individual work and therefore we respond quickly.

Joint Courses

  • We updated our support especially concerning assignment bunching and we made available one-person point of contact.
